Kentucky Derby: The Happy Re-Cap
- Updated: 05/07/2018
The 2018 Kentucky Derby was held Saturday and the best 3 year-old in the world, Justify, was crowned the winner. On a sloppy track, Jockey Mike Smith steered Bob Baffert’s colt superbly to claim victory by 2 1/2 lengths over a very game Good Magic, who nosed out hard charging Audible for second. The over-travelled and over bet Mendelssohn finished dead last (by 73 lengths) after not acting well just prior to the race.
The Head Bozo is proud to report that he hit the trifecta with box (5-6-7-16) and the exacta (twice with both 5-6-7-16 and 6-7-11-7) with his three 4-horse box strategy. The $2 Exacta (7-6) paid $69.60 and the $1 Trifecta (7-6-5) paid $141.40. A decent payoff with the favorite ($7.80) winning.
Mr. Rosen did not fare as well with his selections of Vino Rosso (9th), Enticed (14th) and Magnum Moon (19th) none taking a liking to the muddy track late Saturday. We’ll check back with him in two weeks for the Preakness.
Promises Fulfilled took the early lead as expected and he and Justify ran a very speedy half mile (:45 3/5) before Justify pulled away with 3/8 mile left and bested the closing Good Magic and Audible in the final 1/4 mile. 85-1 Instilled Regard surprisingly finished very well for 4th. Due to the heavy rain, the final Derby time was relatively slow (2:04.20). Justify earned a 103 Beyer figure, with Good Magic and Audible at 100. Our top 2 picks, Good Magic and Audible ran very impressively as no one was going to catch Justify on this day.
Most of the challengers to Justify will take a break from racing for a while and not be back to challenge the Derby winner in Baltimore in two weeks. Bravazo (6th) and some newcomers and the traditional Maryland challenger will race in the Preakness to attempt to derail the Triple Crown dreams of Justify’s connections. The others will as indicated, either rest for some time or gear up for the 1 1/2 mile Belmont in five weeks.
