Wild 4th Quarter Comebacks in Week 4
- Updated: 10/03/2018
4th Quarter comebacks now the norm in pass-happy NFL
Six out of the 15 games (40%) in Week 4 ended with come from behind victories as wild finishes now rule the pass-happy NFL. These crazy finishes include the new youth movement in the NFL, young QBs, who should still be learning are now thrust into action and are performing at an incredibly successful level.
In Atlanta, Andy Dalton led a late charge to beat the Falcons in Atlanta 37-36 when he threw a 13 yard TD pass to AJ Green with 7 seconds remaining. The Redheaded Bungles are now in first place in the AFC North. The Falcons were unable to put away the Saints the week prior, losing in OT as their defense failed them again.
In Dallas, Dak Prescott’s 34 yard pass to Zeke set up the game winning FG, with time running out, as the Cowboys, trailing 24-23 at the time, survived to win by 2 points over the inconsistent Lions.
In Nashville, the Titans, who trailed by 14 (17-3) in the third quarter, rallied to beat the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles 26-23 in OT. Marcus Mariota rallied Tennessee for two TD passes in late in the game. After upsetting Jacksonville last week, the Titans lead the AFC South with a 3-1 record.
In Arizona, Russell Wilson led a late 4th quarter drive and Sebastian Janikowski nailed the game winning FG to spoil a potential first victory for Arizona’s first round pick, QB, Josh Rosen as Seattle kept the Cards, winless 20-17.
In LA, the Chargers needed a 4th qtr. Caleb Sturgis FG to secure their comeback win over the 49ers, 29-26, who started backup QB CJ Beathard in place of the injured Jimmy Garappolo. Phillip Rivers and the Bolts were down 17-6 before scoring 20 straight points in leading the charge.
In Oakland, the $10 million man Jon Gruden notched his first victory in 10 years as the Raiders hit a game winning FG with less than 2 minutes to go in overtime. The Browns had several chances to put the game away but got jobbed by the refs on a terrible first down spot reversal. They also made a HUE-ge mistake trying to protect the lead as the Coach was too much of a wimp to let Baker Mayfield go for it on 4th and 1. Cleveland blew a 14 point lead in the 2nd half and Derek Carr strode 53 yards down the field to tie the game when he threw a 7 yard TD pass with 30 seconds left. Jordy Nelson caught the 2 point conversion to send the game to OT.
Finally, on Monday night in Denver, bright young star in the making, Patrick Mahomes led an exciting comeback as the Chiefs, down 23-13, drove 60 yards for the win with 1:39 left on the clock to edge Denver 27-23. The Broncos had not surrendered such a lead in 14 years.
Young guns Mahomes, Trubisky, Barkley, Mayfield, Prescott, Rosen and Allen are spicing up the league. Runs are generally stopped forcing mobile passers to make exciting plays. The League, with all of its’ officiating problems, still is a blast to watch as most these games come down to the last possession. I watch the Red Zone Channel when the Giants aren’t on TV in Florida, and the 3:30- 4:15 pm time slot is mesmerizing to watch. No commercials, split screens, four boxes, the action moves frantically but perfectly. Moderator Scott Hanson, who has the best job in the world, effortlessly and perfectly sits at his podium narrating the moves from one game to the next.
