Not my first rodeo!

Not my first rodeo!

Why is it that in sports we must be subjected to the same things over and over again and pretend there will be a different result? As somebody who has watched sports for many decades, I can tell you first hand that there are certain obvious truths in life and sports and no matter how we wish for a different outcome, we can rest assured that it will not change.

Recently rookie QB Lamar Jackson has become the latest mobile QB to take the league by storm and win a few games. The mass sports media is going crazy with comparisons to Steve Young and Fran Tarkenton and it has forced the Ravens to actually bench a Super Bowl MVP QB in Joe Flacco. Wake up people! Lamar Jackson cannot pass consistently and will be on the bench next year by game five through injury or benching. We have seen this rodeo before with a guy named Vince Young, who won a National Championship and had 12 games of success in the NFL before defenses realized he can’t beat them with his arm. We saw this with Tim Tebow who went 6-2 and won a playoff game and was out of a job and the league within 12 months because teams realized the guy can’t pass. RG3 burst onto the scene and won rookie of the year before getting hurt and then when he was back on the field teams once again had film and allowed him to pass the ball. This led to him spending a year away from football and then becoming a back up QB for Jackson’s ravens. As I watched Jackson play last week it was painfully obvious this guy cannot pass in the NFL. In college you get a system and an opponent like the Citadel or Georgia Tech to play against. When you do pass, you have upwards of 4-5 seconds to canvass the field, see a man breaking away and then use a slow motion technique to lob the ball 50 yards downfield and all the announcers rave about your pin point accuracy. I also have this sort of accuracy when throwing the pigskin around at a pregame. I literally can hit on the dime my son on the other end of the UCF parking lot with my right hand while holding a Coors light in the other. The problem is that I am not about to be sacked by a 280 lb beast motoring at me at 25 mph! In the NFL you literally have a 2 -3 second window to RELEASE the ball and from what I see of Jackson, he is a poor man’s RG3. The idea that you can teach a 23 year old to pass better now that he is in the NFL is preposterous and if you hear any mass media talk about teaching him to throw better you should turn off the T.V. and smack yourself.

Josh Allen of the Bills has cannon of an arm and needs to work on releasing it quicker and reading a defense. You can work on that in the off season and in practice. Sam Darnold of the Jets has cannon as well, but turns the ball over too much. You can teach him to not throw the ball into tight places and to just throw the ball away instead of trying to be like Brett Favre. Jackson on the other hand throws a Tebow like ball that relies on loft and elevation to get down field due to lack of arm and zip. You cannot teach that in the off season no matter how much you think you can. In the NBA if you have a 6”6 power forward, you can teach him to box out all you want but at the end of the day you can’t teach him to be 6”10 so he can guard Dwight Howard or LaMarcus Aldridge.

Today Josh Gordon of the Patriots announced he needed to take time off to deal with mental health issues he is having. This man is pure genius and I would urge all SportsBozo’s to keep this in their back pocket. The next time you get plastered and don’t feel like going to work, just call the boss and tell him you are dealing with “mental health issues”. Sheer Genius at work and I would like to hear feedback from anyone who is brave enough to try this with his wife when they come home smelling like beer from a strip club: “Honey, this isn’t about bubbles and tiffany at Rachel’s, this is about me and I have to deal with my mental health issues, please try to be understanding”! (Any man who can provide proof this actually worked will get a $50.00 gift certificate to Rachel’s from me!)

The news of this, along with a report that Josh “Up in Smoke” Gordon failed another test is another rodeo I have seen before. How many times do we have to hear this same horse and pony show about getting clean and being a new man? Sorry, I’ve seen this show before and even Steve Howe and Charlie Sheen are shaking their heads at the Patriots for thinking this time will be different. However, all this talk of Gordon brings me to my latest rodeo memory regarding the Pats. After losing the last two weeks to the Fins and Steelers, there are predictions of the demise of the dynasty. Gronk and Edelman are old, their defense is average and now they have lost their only deep threat in Josh Cheech n Chong. Folks, we have seen this rodeo before and do not be surprised to see this team back in the super bowl. Do you really trust Andy Reid or Mike Tomlin in the playoffs? Nobody circles the wagons better than Belichick and Brady and this demise has been predicted many times before and usually Big Ben, Andy Reid, Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning are left answering questions on the podium about how they couldn’t get it done today against the Patriots in the playoffs. Giddy up, because the rodeo is back in town!
