HERE WE GO AGAIN…

White Snake once had a hit song in 1987 with the song ‘Here We Go Again’ and it literally was played nonstop for months and made White Snake relevant for about 15 minutes until somebody remembered they were just a Led Zeppelin cover band for ten years. With the NFL combine coming up, there is a flurry of opinions on whether Heisman winner Kyler Murray could be the 1st pick in the draft or even gets drafted in the first round. For some reason that stupid song is stuck in my head as once again bobble heads in sports media, Mel Kiper and Todd McShay start with their mock drafts and every radio host is suddenly an expert. It amazes me how people who have never played football help shape the draft order and literally cause pressure on franchises to take a guy that everyone knows cannot make it in the NFL. Despite decades of evidence, here we go again with Murray.

Murray is a nice player and put up monster numbers last year at Oklahoma. However, the Big 12 plays defense about as effectively as the French army defends its country. He literally played behind a massive offensive line and could take anywhere from 4-10 seconds to find a receiver. When all else failed, he would take his 4’6” body and run to the sideline and avoid contact which is a good thing because he weighs less than this Bozo did in the 5th grade. Look at the picture above that I took of him for this story. I told him to squat down because he barely came up to my waist when we did this photo shoot. Despite what the pundits claim, this is nothing but the typical ‘underdog story’ that the media eats up year after year. These people actually think Rudy was real and he sacked a quarterback on the final play or that the entire stadium was chanting RUDY! RUDY! RUDY! – and carried him out of the stadium. Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana was there that day and said “It never happened and only a couple linemen fooling around lifted him up, but not the whole team.” Despite what the bobble heads think, size does matter. In football, in basketball and in the bedroom thank you very much! If it didn’t matter you would see me playing in the NBA as a 6”3 center (I’m actually 6”6 with my afro) and Asian men in the porn industry.

We have seen this discussion for decades now and despite clear proof, everyone floats the question on whether a Johnny Manziel, Patrick White, Joe Webb, RG3, Troy Smith, and a host of others can make it. I purposely omitted Lamar Jackson because he is at least 6”3 and when he implodes by week 6 next year I can always come back and edit this story. Every year we are reminded that Russell Wilson is only 5’11” and thus little guys can make it too. The thing people forget is that Wilson is a short guy but not a small guy. He is stout and strong and runs through tacklers. Mike Tyson was short, but he wasn’t small. Murray is SMALL. Murray may weigh in at less than 180 pounds at the combine and that is not going to cut it for a QB who will be hit numerous times per game. Like Lamar Jackson and Johnny football, the highlight reels of his passes are vastly overrated. When QB’s have a ton of time in college and can sit behind a superior line and make a deep throw that resembles a punt more than a pass, they should be accurate on deep throws. But in the NFL you have 2 seconds to make a decision and start your throwing motion and you can’t try to rain drop a throw in like you did in college or you will complete a pick six the other way. The bottom line is that some team will once again fall for this charade and will be blown away by his speed and jumping ability at the combine and make a decision based on a player in gym shorts. Here we go again.
