Sportsbozos Quick 2019 NFL Draft Analysis Non-Giants Edition

Bozo Report Card

The Bozos panel of 3 all correctly predicted #1 QB Kyler Murray to Arizona, #2 DE Nick Bosa to SF and #5 LB Devin White to TB. Brett and Brando nailed Quinnen Williams to the Jets at #3 and Brando correctly called his favorite team, the Dolphins, selecting DT Christian Wilkins at #13. Brando and Brett also had LB Devin Bush being taken at #10, however it was the Steelers and not the Broncos that grabbed him. Brando thought the Giants would take Daniel Jones, which they did, but at #17, not surprisingly at #6.

Obviously, the Giants are the story of the draft and we’ll get to that in a separate article

Wait and See

Murray to Kingsbury and the Cards was all but guaranteed. Josh Rosen, last year’s #1 pick for Arizona (#10 overall as AZ traded up to get him) was the odd-man-out and Miami capitalized on the Cardinals’ ineptitude to support Rosen in his rookie year and by tipping their hand too early by acquiring him with the 62nd overall pick. The HB called Rosen to Miami over the weekend. If Murray becomes a Russell Wilson-type instead of a Johnny Manziel type and AZ flourishes within 3-4 years, then this was worth it. Otherwise, more futility and changes will come in the desert. It was a risky move but a risk they had to take. Larry Fitz won’t be playing longer than this season, so AZ drafted WRs #2, #4 and #6.

The Niners took Bosa Jr. to bolster the edge rush and this should improve their overall lousy defense. 2 WRs snapped up will give Slippin’ Jimmy some more weapons if he can play injury-free this season.

Jets taking the monster in the middle NT from ‘Bama-Q. Williams has to be an upgrade. They also grabbed Florida DE J. Polite so the DL has been bolstered. He’s no Scott Mersereau but he’ll have to suffice!

The Raiders confused everybody by taking Clemson DE Clelin Ferrell fourth. Most thought the Edge guy from Kentucky J. Allen or Ed Oliver from Houston would go. Ferrell will be solid, not spectacular. Later in the 1st round, Chucky took ‘Bama RB J. Jacobs and a Miss St. Safety. Still lots of work to do before packing for Vegas.

Josh Allen fell into the Jags lap at #7 after the Giants panicked. Coughlin then stole a tackle from Gainesville and Old Tom is livin’ large.
The Miami Dolphins, with Rosen and Wilkins, then added two Badger meat-eaters to shore up the inside. I don’t think the fans “tanking for Tua” expectation is going to pan out. I can actually picture Rosen succeeding. Hell, the Fins deserve a break after putting up with mediocrity from Tannehill for seven years. He’ll probably win the AFC with Tennessee this year!

Lots of linemen on both sides of the ball were taken this year and only one RB (Jacobs) and one WR (#32) by NE (N. Harry -ASU) in the first round.

Wait and See (Part Deux)

Everybody thinks Washington had a high quality draft- that they benefitted from the Giants passing on Ohio State QB Haskins, who they picked at #15 or MSU DE Montez Sweat, with the 26th pick. Inmate Sweat will fit in immediately, he is green, with raw talent, but could turn out to be a menace to QBs. Haskins owns all the Big 10 numbers now but his lack of agility and ability to win big games may continue to plague him. I’m seeing a Jacoby Brissett or a Leftwich here, maybe a Culpepper. Poor footwork/ mechanics may dog him for a while. Hey, at the helm, Haskins’ led OSU was buried 49-20 by Purdue and were lucky to win by a point in OT vs. Maryland. He’s a project.

Fewer trades than usual in the first round, this draft was less interesting (except for the Giants) than expected. Unless, of course, you get excited about two Tight Ends from Iowa taken off the board in the 8th and 20th picks.
