WINTER IS COMING FOR THE GIANTS
- Updated: 04/30/2019
The NY football Giants continue their quest to take their rightful throne back as one of the elite franchises in the NFL realm over the last 30 years. Unfortunately, their GM Dave Gettleman doesn’t understand that “Winter is Coming” and he continues to make the most moves and non moves in recent history. At the rate he is going, the Cleveland Browns GM can actually mock him openly. Last year was a QB rich draft and five QBs were drafted and all ended up starting at some point in the season. The four QBs taken in the top ten in 2018 all started the season for their teams. This is the thing about drafting a QB in the top ten; they are expected to play right away. But along comes Gettleman who reached for Duke QB Daniel Jones and in a news conference over the weekend suggested that the 6th pick in the draft may sit for at least one or three years. Excuse me? You passed on players who can play tomorrow for a guy so he can sit and learn for a few years? Now there are some who like to point to the Packers and Chiefs as teams that took a QB and had them sit. However, Rodgers was the LAST pick of the 1st round and the guy in front of him was still in his prime (Brett Favre). As for the Chiefs, Mahomes sat behind a solid pro bowl QB in Alex Smith for one year. In the case of the G-men, they have the statue of liberty with a knee brace on playing QB and he has been in steady decline for three years now. If Eli Manning can’t get it done at 38 playing with OBJ, do you really think he will get better at 41? Here are the cold, hard, winter is coming facts for the Giants:
Fact: Daniel joins completed 59% of his passes in college. That’s not good. Your completion percentage doesn’t go up in the NFL.
Fact: The knock against Jones is that he does not possess a strong arm or special arm talent and is more of a game manager.
Fact: The Giants play in a wind tunnel in New Jersey where it gets cold and blustery.
To play in the North East you have to have cannon. That is why Big Ben excelled and Mark Sanchez failed. This is why the Bills drafted Josh Allen last year, who many claim can throw a football through a brick wall. Quite frankly the NFL is littered with ‘game managers’ who can be had in later rounds instead of with a top 10 pick. One of the more telling signs about Jones I received was listening to a sports writer who covers Duke Football and his exact quote was:
“I always liked him and thought he could someday be in the NFL, but more as a clipboard holder for a few years and a couple starts here or there. But I never thought he would be a 1st round pick. There was never a time when I watched him play over the last three years where I was blown away with a throw”
Winter is coming for the franchise and this one pick could set the franchise back another five years. Quite frankly, if I ran the G-men I would throw him into the game no later than game three and see if he can possibly play. Maybe he surprises me and others and does great. However if he is pathetic, the Giants win 4 games and can tank for Tua or Herbert of Oregon. Today the Cardinals announced that Kyler Murray will be their starting QB and they are preparing him as we speak. The Giants instead want Jones to learn under a 38 year old QB who has an 8-24 record the last two years.
