Bozos Pulling for Phil to Capture Career Grand Slam at US Open –Pebble Beach
- Updated: 06/12/2019
Phil Mickelson turns 49 years old on US Open Sunday this weekend. The Open is the only Grand Slam that has eluded him in his illustrious career. He has won the Pro-Am at Pebble five times now after capturing the title earlier this year. He came in 2nd last year (2018) and in 2016. His Grandpa was one of the first caddies there. It is his home away from home. And Phil has really stepped up his dance moves.
Even in his late 40’s, Phil has the approach shots and greens-in-regulation stats to ensure a top finish. As a master of the up-and-down, the Bozos are expecting a little Birthday Magic come Father’s Day. The greens won’t be as ridiculously speedy as they are for the usual Open, which has sparked recent controversy, when at Shinnecock, players complained that again, the USGA “lost” the course. Phil’s short game and his knowledge of the course and putting acumen will put him in prime position for the upset come Sunday.
Realistically, it’ll be tough for Phil to win. The competition is stronger than it ever has been in his career. Tiger is back after his incredible win at the Masters in April. Rory shot 61 in his final round to win at the Canadian Open last week, Koepka, won the PGA (as the Bozos predicted) and has won the last two Opens and Dustin Johnson won in ’16 and tied for 2nd this year at the Masters. Spieth is finding his way back and Justin Thomas is returning strong after a wrist injury and is due for a win.
Francisco Molinari has been on fire in the Majors, Justin Rose won the Farmers and has five top 10’s this season.
I like Phil to make a run at the glory as this may be his last shot. Winged Foot next year and Torrey Pines the year after are not courses suited for his occasional wildness off the tee.
We’ll place a few sheckles on the old man to win at 49-1 but we are going a little heavier on him to finish in the Top 10 at 4-1 and in the Top 5 at 8-1. Yes 49-1 on his 49th birthday! Better than Buster Douglas over Tyson (42-1)!
Even through the value is not there, we’re going to play both DJ and Rory to win at 9-1 each. DJ loves the Open and has some revenge on his mind and Rory, he’s just on fire! DJ finished 3rd in 2017 and 2nd in 2018 in Carmel. Rory won the prestigious Players this year and is a past US Open Champion in 2011. One of these chuckleheads should make it to the back nine Sunday!
Paul Casey is worthy of a Top 10 wager at 5-1 by virtue of his 2nd place finish this year and his 8th place finish at Pebble in 2018.
Jason Day is our wild card. Day finished 4th this year at Pebble, second in 2018 and 5th in ’17. He has Tiger’s old caddy, Steve Williams on the bag now and old Stevie knows Pebble like the back of his hand. We like Day at 3-1 for the top 10 and 6-1 to finish in the Top 5.
After a round of sweaty golf with the fellow Bozo Sunday, I’ll kick back to watch what should be a riveting Father’s Day Sunday!
